The Attitude of Gratitude
“This is a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.” Maya Angelou
As I sit down to write this, we’re in the middle of a heated election season, and negativity abounds. In what I call today’s “me-centric” society, it can be easy to jump on the bandwagon and wallow in despair when things aren’t going our way.
I don’t want to discount the challenges that we are all faced with each day, especially the professional challenges we have in serving the residents in our affordable housing communities. Things are hard, and the struggles are real. In my last two years working at Montview Manor, I have seen the effect the pandemic has had on our residents – loss of health, community, family, security, income . . . the list goes on. I’ve also witnessed many examples of how a practice of gratitude can reframe life’s struggles, learning from and leading this community of residents who make it a priority to care for one another with whatever resources and skills they possess. Just yesterday, a resident stopped into the office and walked me through how she was able to reframe every negative into a positive. Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could all learn to live this way?
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I am grateful for my many blessings. A safe, warm home. A support network of friends and family. A community of residents who take care of each other (and me) each and every day. And the opportunity to work with the dedicated Archway team to provide safe, affordable communities, with the supportive services they need, where our residents can thrive.
Gratitude is a foundation pillar of Archway Communities and a choice. I hope we can all choose to leave negativity behind and celebrate the connections in our lives, making choices that can create positive ripples in the lives of others.
Happy Thanksgiving!
